Karate
Karate, translated as empty (kara) hand (te) in Japanese, is primarily a striking or percussion type of martial art.
Our emphasis for beginners is on Shotokan Karate, which is one of the most popular Japanese styles in the world. In this approach straight and powerful technique is dominant.
Our intention is to develop a well-rounded student in the martial arts, therefore exposure to a variety of techniques and principles is very important. We test our Karate students on Judo and Aikido techniques and higher belts will be graded on the use of the weapons of their choice as they are offered by our school.
Our curriculum is based on a program offered by Renshi Campsall's first martial arts instructor, Kyoshi Fred Walker of Hiryu Bushido Kai Martial Arts and Wellness Centre.
Through guidance from Hanshi Cezar Borkowski of Northern Karate Schools, and his own personal study, Renshi Campsall has made his own alterations to the program which has made Okami Kai's Karate curriculum one of the most challenging yet beneficial training programs available.
Students will progress through an 8 level system before obtaining their black belt. Each student is given a handbook that contains the requirements for each of these levels as well as the requirements necessary for obtaining ranks after Shodan (the first degree black belt level). The student will be exposed to more than what is listed but must know all of the current level requirements as well as any previously learned techniques.
Due to the various ages of our students, our classes have been divided into categories. This allows us to provide more attention on an individual basis to each student's needs. We are also able to make the necessary changes needed in order to address the concerns of each age group. For example, our Youth program will address more concerns over anti-bullying techniques than our Adult program.
